UPDATED 11-28-11: I wanted to take a moment to come back on here to post my thanks. I have received so many well wishes and prayers for my mother and our family. The kindess of strangers has blown me away. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I also wanted to thank those who have continued to send in donations despite the rescue not being active. This is such a HUGE help. Donations being received are going to medical care of our lifers, food, and anything left over is being banked in our rescue account. We still have the dream of purchasing land one day. It is my hope that 2012 will bring a cure for my mother's cancer and allow me to get back to helping the breed I love. Again, thank you all so much.
*It is with a heavy heart I have to say that our rescue is temporarily closed. The past few months have brought forth circumstances that have rearranged my life. I'm sharing this with all of you after receiving some nasty emails regarding my away status on our rescue email. Some people are seeing my "break" as an unwillingness to help or a lack of compassion. The truth is that after months of testing, my mother has been diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer. There is no cure and she is currently undergoing chemotherapy in hopes of slowing the progress and allowing her a little bit more time with us here before the Lord calls her home.
My Bully Boutique will remain open so I can support the "lifers" in my care and cover their vet expenses. I might have been the one to rescue those lifers but during this hard period in my life, they have been the ones who have rescued me. They have allowed me to cry into their fur and lick away my tears. I can't imagine my life without my pits.
I hope everyone will understand how hard it is for me to admit I can't do everything and make the decision on what I have to cut back on. I won't be away forever and once I'm able to take back on my work load, I'll post it here first! People with pits in need are always welcome to post them on Central Florida Pit Bull's Rescue Page on Facebook. Simply type in Central Florida Pit Bull in the search box to find the group.
I wish I could post a listing of shelters with openings but most are full and then some. Family owned pits in need can check the Central Florida SPCA here in Orlando to see if there is any space. I know a few of the staff members personally and they are very pit friendly. They do NOT euthanize unless there is a medical or aggression issue. I can't speak for SPCA's in other areas but our local one is wonderful. I've also had a few people send me flyers via snail mail for pits who need homes. I'm more than happy to make copies and put them up when I'm out doing my errands. My husband also makes copies and post them in their break room.
Thanks to everyone who is understanding during this difficult time. Prayers and support are much appreciated!*
*All our updates will be posted on our news page. Please check it often!*
*We are currently unable to take in any more dogs at this time (our need for land is urgent) but I will gladly forward an email out to all my contacts. Networking works!*
We'd like to take a moment to tell you a little about the rescue. We are a family team! We are members of the SPCA of Central Florida and attend Pit Bull Education courses were we've served as ambassador. We also assist other rescues and facilities in promoting their pits that need a good home.
Pit Bulls do face breed racism. It's a sad fact. Some people have a closed mind and can't be reached. Other simply have the wrong perception of the breed and those minds we can change! A well behaved Pit Bull walking quietly on a leash or playing gently with a child can send a powerful message to people. The media seems to focus on the negative and not the positive. Have Pit Bulls attacked people? Yes. But so have many other breeds that aren't considered dangerous, so those cases don't get the media attention. I believe there are no bad dogs, just bad owners. Personally, I would like to see more attention put on the how people abuse the breed by forcing them to fight. Shed some light on the cruelty that these dogs have to endure for the entertainment of some disturbed people. With that being said, there are cases were the cruelty has gone on too long or to much trauma as been endured and those dogs can't adjust back to normal life. In situations like that, everyone involved has to look at the big picture and make the decision on what course of action to take.
The bullies don't have a voice, but we do. We will sing their praise and seek to end the racism that haunts the breed.
Please help with the problems this wonderful breed faces. Spay and/or neuter your pets. Just because a dog is beautiful, doesn't mean it should have puppies. Just take a walk through a local shelter to see the amount of dogs that have to call it home. Report animal cruelty to the authorities and turn in those who participate or promote dog fighting. There are those who see it as a sport but it's a heinous crime that sees the loser killed or tortured due to the lost it cost their owner.
